Position Summary

Gering High School Campus Security Guard is responsible for supporting a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors across the high school campus, with a primary focus on the LINKS Alternative Program. This position serves as the main point of contact for security and safety concerns within the LINKS program and works closely with building and district administration to monitor student behavior, address concerns, and maintain established safety and security procedures.

The Security Guard will provide a visible security presence, conduct routine security rounds, monitor surveillance systems, support student entry and exit procedures, and respond appropriately to safety, behavioral, and security concerns.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

LINKS Alternative Program

• Serve as the primary point of contact for security and safety at the LINKS Alternative Program.
• Conduct student check-ins for both AM and PM sessions.
• Monitor students for behavioral, safety, or security concerns and communicate issues to administration.
• Work collaboratively with administrators and staff to problem-solve concerns and determine appropriate responses.
• Maintain a visible and supportive presence while promoting a safe and positive learning environment.
• Uphold established student entry and exit procedures.
• Monitor student movement and access to designated areas.

Campus Security and Safety

• Conduct regular security rounds of the LINKS, automotive, and woodshop areas.
• Monitor campus areas for safety hazards, security concerns, unauthorized access, or other issues.
• Support the implementation and enforcement of district safety and security procedures.
• Respond appropriately to incidents, emergencies, and other safety concerns.
• Assist administration and staff with emergency response procedures as needed.
• Maintain awareness of activities occurring throughout the campus and report concerns promptly.

Camera and Surveillance Responsibilities

• Serve as the district's primary resource and expert for security camera systems.
• Monitor security cameras at the high school and LINKS Program for safety, security, and behavioral concerns.
• Identify and report suspicious activity, safety concerns, or unauthorized access observed through surveillance systems.
• Assist administration with reviewing camera footage when incidents or concerns arise.
• Help identify and communicate potential camera system issues or maintenance needs.

Student Support and Conflict Resolution

• Establish positive, professional relationships with students while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
• Monitor student behavior and address concerns in a calm, consistent, and respectful manner.
• Utilize de-escalation and conflict-resolution techniques when addressing challenging situations.
• Work with administrators and staff to resolve student concerns and maintain a safe environment.
• Maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate judgment when handling student and security-related information.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Previous experience or background in safety, security, law enforcement, military service, school security, or a related field preferred.
• Experience working with adolescents or in an educational setting preferred.
• Training or experience in de-escalation techniques.
• Strong conflict-resolution and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to remain calm and professional during stressful or challenging situations.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Customer-service oriented and able to interact positively with students, staff, families, and visitors.
• Technology savvy with the ability to learn and effectively use security camera and surveillance systems.
• Familiarity with emergency response and school safety procedures.
• SRP (Standard Response Protocol) training or willingness to complete training.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with administrators and staff.

Physical and Work Environment Requirements

• Ability to remain alert and attentive for extended periods.
• Ability to walk throughout the campus and conduct routine security rounds.
• Ability to respond quickly to safety or security situations.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• May require occasional work during non-standard school hours, including before or after regular school hours.
